Although the Blastrac Equipment has fully Ex rated electric motors, cabling and glanding the actual shot blasting process was thought to have the potential for spark which, by nature of the activity, cannot be removed.
BME issued all electrical drawings and provided a hot spot analysis along with full operating procedures to Nexen onshore/offshore Superintendents/HSE focal points. It was agreed with the correct use including ongoing PM maintenance of the Blastrac Unit, the unit could be safely operated with added controls to the permit as follows:
The Blastrac operations were ongoing for a 3 month period on all levels of the Production Platform without incident.
The operation only required a single operative and achieved a very high level of meterage per shift. Together with the time saved on scaffold built habitats and clean-up, and the reduced requirement for helicopter seats, the total savings came to approximately £192,000 - a significant cost reduction for the project compared to traditional surface preparation methods.
