Overview

With a very large deck surface area requiring surface preparation for coatings application on the new Aircraft Carriers being built and fully assembled at Rosyth dockyard, BME Services engaged in lengthy discussions about the suitability of using our Blastrac equipment.

Challenge & Solution

Due to the nature of the equipment on the aircraft carrier extensive trialling of the Blastrac equipment was undertaken to ensure there was no loss of spent shot or dust to the air or surrounding areas, with all testing completed and Blastrac approved for use.

Following the trial for WOOD PLC and further reviews and approvals by SSSL/Babcock and BAE Systems we commenced our contract with WOOD on the aircraft carrier during 2014, initially on the hanger deck and subsequently on the steel flight deck and lifts.

Result & Value to Client

BME continued to support this mega project over the next 2 years and in total completed the surface preparation of over 40,000m2 all to the inspector’s approval.

Using fully recoverable closed circuit Blastrac surface preparation equipment removed the need for costly clean up and disposal of expendable abrasive. Along with the encapsulation of sensitive equipment, this solution provided our client with a high level of time savings as well as an increased meterage rate achieved with fewer operatives than traditional methods.

With the savings and work methods achieved on the Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier we were then contracted to complete the same on the Prince of Wales Aircraft Carrier with work commencing in 2018.

BME Group opened its hydraulic and hose assembly division in 2019, located in Bridge of Don, Aberdeen. With workshops and pressure test bays the facility can provide fast reaction services to local industries and the mobile van service can manufacture on-site at your location.
