Overview

The operator of a platform in the North Sea asked BME to prepare the surfaces of their walkways and decks as part of a refurbishment programme.

Challenge & Solution

BME was tasked with carrying out the surface preparation whilst the platform was live and with SIMOPS going on in all areas. BME offered their BLASTRAC 350EX unit, the only system in the Oil and Gas sector suitable for blasting large surface areas in hazardous locations. After discussions with the client’s FM team and safety team, BME put together a detailed method statement demonstrating that their advanced style of surface preparation would meet all requirements safely and efficiently with minimal disruption to production. They also explained that it would avoid the need for mass clean-ups and habitats and reduce environmental impact while providing a large cost saving.

Result & Value to Client

Using the closed-circuit BLASTRAC unit, the BME team completed surface preparation work on a total area of over 800m², working within the client’s production windows.

The client was therefore able to coat all decks without affecting other work schedules in any way.

Whilst on site additional areas were identified and confirmed by the client. There were added to the work-scope meterage and were also completed as part of the project.
