Then Stena ferry was coming into drydock at Harland & Wolff for its yearly limited dock duration for all the required maintenance including 4150m2 of vehicle decks/ramps. There was a short timeframe for surface preparation including coatings.

Challenge & Solution

BME were faced with a challenging timescale given the meterage required to be blasted ahead of the painting teams. The BME Project Office saw this as an opportunity to assist a very valued customer to meet their own schedule deadlines. The project team decided to use 3 of our largest Blastrac units, the 500 series, and to run a double shift using 3 technicians on each shift. This method let us operate for a full 24 hours to ensure that the required meterage rates of circa 1000m2 per day could be achieved.

Result & Value to Client

On completion of day 4 the last of the vehicle decks were handed over to the painting teams allowing the decks to be completed within the required timescale. In addition to the surface preparation of the vehicle decks we also completed the escape walkway painting for passenger access.
