The operator and the fabric maintenance contractor were keen to use Blastrac equipment to prepare the surface on the Maersk Highlander aluminium helideck following very good feedback from other WOOD Industrial deck surface projects we had completed.

Challenge & Solution

The client requested a detailed account of what the equipment was capable of achieving and what savings could be made against conventional dry blasting or UHP surface preparation.

The following information was provided with example work scopes identified to ensure the accuracy of the equipment productivity levels.

Single operative
No compressed air required
Closed circuit system avoiding costly clean-up as all waste transfers to enclosed skip
Surface area achieved between 15m2 – 25m2 per hour typically
No requirement for costly scaffold habitats
When not blasting the operative can fall back into painting crew and assist

Result & Value to Client

Following extensive discussions with our client on various scenarios it was decided to mobilise a single Blastrac unit but with two operatives to allow both dayshift and nightshift operations.

This allowed the helideck area of 510m2 to have the surface preparation and primer completed within 3 days inclusive of set-up and de-rig durations. Maersk then asked us to work on further areas when they witnessed how quick and clean the operation was. The additional areas were completed while the team was onsite, ensuring the client received the most efficient use of the equipment & operatives.
